By the late 1700s slavery in the North was dying out. Farming was not a dependable job, and religious and political views on it created many negative opinions. By 1804 almost all the states north of Delaware had made laws to abolish or end slavery. In the South, slaves’ importance grew exponentially with the invention of the cotton gin. Southerners, especially plantation owners wanted for slavery to remain legal. The increase in cotton production was directly related to the number of slaves. In 1790 there were around 700,000 slaves and almost 3000 bales of cotton were produced a year. By 1810 There were 1,200,000 slaves in America and over 178,000 bales of cotton were produced a year. Not all Blacks in the South were slaves , some achieved their freedom by the 1800’s but the majority still remained enslaved.
